A pair of children befriend an eccentric old man, who lives isolated on the far shore of their island home. But it turns out that the old man knows a terrible secret about the island and the whales who sometimes come. Meanwhile WWI is making life hard in the village.

When the Wolves Came follows the day leading up to a devastating village raid. Caught in the chaos are Alfred, a village head facing ruin; Aemma, a woman ensnared in forbidden ties; Sebastian, a disillusioned warrior; and Kira and Jason, siblings thrust into a brutal fight for survival.

There is an inn named Asano Ya in the port town, and a beautiful woman works there. Every year, during a local festival, travelling artists and teachers gather from all over the country, including sesame oil sellers and organ grinders. The day before the festival, trouble arises with some horses.

This animated road movie documents Poland during the communist era. With a sense of humour, in a comic book style and with Polish music in the background, it shows the story of people trying to evade martial law.
